It is the first real question every council, club and school faces when planning a new or reconstructed sporting surface: natural turf or synthetic? The honest answer is that neither is universally “better.” They are different tools that solve different problems, and the right choice depends on how many hours the field has to carry each week, the sport it is built for, the drainage of the site, and the budget you have to run it over the next decade, not just the day it opens.

Playing performance
Natural turf still sets the benchmark for feel underfoot in most football codes. It grips, releases and cushions in a way players describe as “true,” it does not retain heat the way synthetic can on a hot Western Sydney afternoon, and for cricket there is no substitute for a properly prepared natural wicket. Its weakness is consistency: a natural surface changes through the season and degrades in high-wear zones, goalmouths, centre circles, cricket run-ups, faster than the rest of the field.
Modern synthetic (artificial grass for sports) has closed much of the gap. A quality third-generation system with an appropriate infill gives a predictable, even surface that plays the same in July as it does in January, in the wet as in the dry. For fast-paced ball sports on a heavily used ground, that consistency is often the deciding factor. The trade-offs are surface temperature in summer, a firmer feel than a soft natural pitch, and the need to select the correct pile height and infill for the sport rather than assuming one carpet suits all.
Usage hours: the number that decides most fields
This is the metric that quietly determines the answer for a lot of councils and clubs. Natural turf needs recovery time. The grass plant has to rest and regrow, which is why heavily booked natural fields develop bare, compacted, muddy patches by mid-winter no matter how good the maintenance is, the field simply cannot recover between sessions.
Synthetic turf has no such ceiling. It can take back-to-back training and matches, day after day, in almost any weather, which is why a single synthetic field can absorb the load that would otherwise require two or three natural ones. For a shared community ground under constant pressure, the reality across much of Western Sydney, that difference in available playing hours is frequently the whole business case.
Drainage and weather resilience
A field is only useful if you can play on it. Natural turf drainage depends on the profile beneath it, the sub-base, the rootzone, and the drainage system installed during construction. Done well, a natural field drains and recovers properly; done poorly, it closes after every heavy rain. This is exactly why the construction underneath matters as much as the grass on top, and why reconstruction, rebuilding the profile and drainage, not just re-turfing, is often what a tired natural field really needs.
Synthetic systems are built on an engineered, free-draining base and can typically be played on within minutes of rain stopping. For clubs that lose whole weekends of fixtures to wet-weather closures, that resilience translates directly into games played, fees earned and seasons finished on schedule.
Cost over the life of the field
Comparing sticker prices is where most turf decisions go wrong. The right comparison is total cost of ownership over the surface’s life, not the day-one build cost.

The pattern is clear: natural turf carries a lower build cost and a higher, ongoing running cost; synthetic carries a higher build cost, a lower running cost, and a known replacement event at the end of its service life. When you spread both across ten years and factor in the extra playing hours a synthetic field delivers, the “expensive” option is often the cheaper one per hour of play, but only where usage is high enough to justify it. On a lightly used field, natural turf usually stays ahead on whole-of-life cost.
Maintenance: two very different jobs
Natural and synthetic fields are not “high maintenance” versus “no maintenance”, they are different maintenance, and getting either wrong shortens the field’s life.
- Natural turf needs a genuine turf-management program: mowing, irrigation, fertilising, aeration, topdressing, weed and pest control, and periodic renovation to relieve compaction and rebuild worn zones. Skip it and the surface fails early.
- Synthetic turf is not maintenance-free. It needs regular grooming to keep the pile upright and the infill level, infill top-ups, and decompaction to preserve drainage and performance. Neglect it and it hardens, drains poorly and wears prematurely.
The takeaway for asset owners: budget for the maintenance regime the surface you choose actually requires, and build that cost into the decision from the start.
When each surface wins, by sport
Soccer / football
This is where synthetic most often makes sense. Where usage is lighter or a natural feel is preferred, a properly constructed and drained natural pitch remains an excellent choice.
Rugby league and union
Both codes are played successfully on natural and synthetic. Natural turf suits grounds that can be rested and rotated; synthetic suits heavily shared grounds that cannot. Where synthetic is chosen for contact codes, the base construction and shock-absorption of the system matter enormously, this is not a surface to build cheaply.
Cricket
Cricket keeps natural turf firmly in the picture. A prepared natural wicket is the standard for serious cricket, and outfields are frequently natural too. Synthetic wickets have a clear role for high-turnover community and school use where preparing natural wickets isn’t practical, but the premium playing surface remains natural.
How to make the call for your field
Work through it in this order: how many hours a week the surface has to carry, the sport (or sports) it is built for, how the site drains, and the budget you have to run it over the next decade, not just to build it. Heavy, shared, all-weather use points to synthetic; moderate use, a cricket wicket, or a preference for natural playing character points to well-constructed natural turf.
